I live, garden, gather and press plants on an island encompassing 55 square miles of incredible beauty in the Salish Sea, northwest of Seattle. My gardens supply most of my flowers, leaves and weeds used in my artwork. The rest I gather from roadsides and generous friends. As weeds rule the garden, I’m making good use of them!
Drawing and painting since I was little, I was considered a talented child. In middle school I had the great good fortune of an exceptional art teacher who managed to get me excused from classes two afternoons a week to attend Cranbrook Academy of Art. I was really too young to be drawing almost-nude-adults (I didn’t tell Mom), but I loved being there. People drew pictures to explain themselves when words failed, classrooms smelled of linseed oil and turpentine, and I felt I belonged.
Art school was so much fun I repeated the experience, earning a BFA in Illustration with Honors from Art Center College of Design. I worked in web design and usability, digital media and advertising before moving to the island.
I use pressed and dried flowers in an unconventional way. I want to make this traditional art contemporary, relevant, interesting, odd, challenging, perhaps even disturbing – but while preserving the beauty of the plants I so dearly love. Working with dead ‘media’ and with death as a subject seemed a perfect match. Dia de Los Muertos skulls, or sugar skulls, is a playful way to reimagine the use of pressed and dried flowers. I hope you enjoy them.
If you’d like to know the names of the plants used to create your print, I’m happy to provide a sketch that will identify them. I list the plants both by common and botanical names, and indicate which part of the plant is used. Send a request via email and the sketch will be on its way.
Please consider joining my newsletter for news of sales and new releases. I have several new unconventional ideas up my sleeve! I will never sell your address, and my emails are infrequent. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram to see my “office” – my garden – and to see how I create my images.
Thank you!
